Our History

Pepperell Mill’s roots go back to 1844, when Pepperell Manufacturing Company was incorporated and work began on the canal system that would help power the mills. From 1849 to 1949, the company operated at the Saco River falls, making cotton textiles and helping define Biddeford’s economy for a full century.

That history still gives the campus its weight. Today, as part of the Biddeford-Saco Mills Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, Pepperell Mill continues to serve Biddeford in a new way with space for businesses, makers, residents, visitors, restaurants, offices, studios, and creative work.
